Orthopaedic Surgeon, Bob Greene and his wife Elaine have spent the last decade serving in hospitals in developing countries.  They are currently serving at a hospital in the Horn of Africa and sent this report on recent SIGN surgeries performed.

Dear Friends and Family,

It’s been a rather busy holiday season at work. We have more people arrive promptly with fractures of the legs requiring surgical stabilization. It seems like it’s been the SIGN nail season. Probably as the word gets out about SIGN we will be seeing more of these type of fractures. This confirms our sense of calling to this place, as it is a location of maximum need. See the images of our cases below, including our 40th SIGN surgery.

Patient 1

A 40 year old man broke his leg while running and accidentally falling into a drop-off. A SIGN nail enabled him to be up on his feet and home within 3 days.

Patient 2

A 16 year old boy was shot during a demonstration. It missed his artery but bruised his nerve. His shattered femur was stabilized with a SIGN nail. The next day we were thanked by the Vice President and the Governor.

Patient 3

A 20 year old was forced to walk on his right tip-toes after an injury. Surgery included removing wedges from his two bones and fusing the ankle joint with a SIGN nail.

Patient 4

Our 40th SIGN nail surgery! This 60 year old lady had tried to walk on this non-union for three years. The pain kept her from walking without crutches.

Patient 5

This 16 year old boy was treated unsuccessfully for a lower leg fracture by a traditional healer. After eight weeks the bone was trimmed and a SIGN nail was used to restore alignment.

Patient 6

This 19 year old sustained a gunshot wound during a demonstration. The repair with a SIGN hip construct enabled him to get out of bed and get home sooner.
